Phantasmagoria

Prototype Scenes

Theatre Entrance

Alpha Theatre Entrance

Here is the theatre door from the mansion's main entrance. In the alpha render, like most leftovers in Phantasmagoria, is unusualy bright and void of much detail. The room structure is pretty much the same. The wooden trim along the wall has also changed. The piano and corner bar are still present.

Main Staircase

Alpha Main Staircase

The staircase in the main hall that provides access to the upper floors. Again, the statue on the left in the alpha render make another appearence, but is replaced with the large sculpture in the final. The alpha render's stairs are untextured, and the railing looks a bit different. The painting on the right is also missing.

Library

Beta Library

The library on the ground floor. Unlike the above two alpha renders, this one if more complete, but lacks a few things. Namley, anti-aliasing in the first shot... the distance gets really sharp and fuzzy. The entire table is black due to the overlay object missing (which decides what parts of the scenery the main charater can walk through). In the beta, the door on the left to the main foyer is shut, while the secret entrance in the fireplace is missing the bricks that Adrienne carves out to reach the alter.

Darkroom

Alpha Darkroom

Some differences here in the first floor darkroom. Noticiable right away is that the roon is exceptionally bright in the alpha render. The wall textures are different than in the final, and the overlay objects are missing again (although they are present in the final, they aren't loaded). There is also a trim going around the wall, and the floor looks to be made of wood.

Side Door

Beta Sidedoor

A lot of differences here to be spotted. First off, almost every texture is different: the walls are a different type of stone, the door is a wooden sheet with no handle, the ground has less grass than the final, and the logs on the left look odd. There is also nothing in the very-basic looking window (no reflection), and the sides of the house are missing the grime that is building up in the final.

Guest Bedroom

Beta Guest Bedroom

Not much of a change here besides different textures running along the wall and the bed sheets. In the final, the pillow on the bed is much more basic than the one created for the alpha render. Even the same camera angle is used.

Kitchen

Unknown Kitchen Area (Stove?)

This scene and camera angle never exists in the final. It should be in the area below, but this was taken from an alpha render: a lot of the textures are missing. According to the outside location, this would be opposite the stove. This is probably a view inside. This is a static image, so the door to the stove is always open.

Real Estate office

Beta Real Estate Office Door

A small change here, but the area outside is supposed to be a view of the town, not completely blue. Also, the door is part of the scene, and not an overlay object, meaning it could never open in the first place.

Malcolm's House

Malcolm's House Stairs/Fence

These two shots are both unused and look to be unfinished. The one on the left is outside Malcolm's house: it features both bland textures and an odd camera angle. The one on the right looks like the scene that occurs when Adrienne is stopped from entering the house by Malcolm's dog, but this shot is lower.

Unused Scenes

Malcolm's House

Inside Malcolm's House

This scene happens in the game, but during an FMV clip, so the player never actualy enters the house. It is a shot from behind Malcolm's chair. Once Adrienne leaves the house during the final disc, she can never re-enter.

Library

Library Bookshelf (?)

Found around library scene files, this looks like an extreme close-up of the bookshelf. Adreinne CAN read some of the books in the library, but the angle in different, and the camera never zooms in this much.

Marie's Room

Marie's Room Corner/Counter

These two shots are from the completed game, but never seen in-game. The shot on the left exists, but the camera is a bit farther. The one on the right looks similar to another render already existing in the game (missing overlay objects).

Yard

Large view of the Yard

Here is a very large view of the yard. This image has almost twice the image dimensions of the normal scenes in the game, so the engine couldn't use this anyway. There are tons of overlay objects missing (rocks, fountain, etc). A shot this large never appears in the game, rather, the screens are broken down elsewhere.

(Title Screen)

Old "Phantasmagoria" title screen

An older version of the main title screen. This image can be found in early previes for the game in magazines and such. The image dimensions (640x480) suggests it may of been used before the actual game started.

Leftover Text

Chapter 8

Found inside the resource file, these lines seem to suggest an 8th chapter, although only seven exist (for all seven discs). A big debate among the Phantasmagoria fan community is the presence of additional chapters, although besides this string of text, there are no additional resources included in the game that suggest there is more to than what Sierra intended (no "happy" ending where Don lives and the demon is killed, no epilouge, no mention of Phantasmagoria 2).

"Test" and 3rd Floor Hallway

Two statements can be found listed in the resource file that mentions rooms that do not exist in the final version of the game. The most obvious is the Test room, which is not mentioned anywhere else. It might of been a placeholder. The second is the 3rd floor hallway which does not exist. The mansion's "third floor" is just a single room in the tower. This could just be mistake in naming the room. It is interesting to note that there are many rooms and scenes that are missing from this list, like Garden Shed and the entire town. Some rooms also have odd names like "Collectables" and "Chapter 7."
